Job Description

When you join the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), you become at the center of transforming health care. You are on the leading edge of ensuring family doctors have what they need to adapt and you’re part of a legacy that has been instrumental in improving and advocating for family medicine since 1947. Make an impact that matters. Be Team AAFP.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The 2024 Summer Internship will primarily focus on equipping AAFP Chapters with advanced advocacy resources to promote legislation that addresses family medicine. Examples of issues that are priority for AAFP Chapters include:

  • Scope of Practice Expansion
  • Investing in Primary Care
  • Medical Education and Residency Issues
  • Parity in Health Coverage
  • Preceptor Tax Credits
  • Prior Authorization/Step Therapy
  • Vaccine Legislation
  • Doctor/Patient Relationship Issues
  • Bills that Criminalize Physician Care

The intern will spend most of their time researching these issues, and developing advocacy materials such as background documents, draft Speak Outs, testimony and social media assets. Such deliverables offer the intern an opportunity to build and strengthen professional skills particularly in research, analysis, writing, organization and interpersonal communications.

In addition to supporting chapters, the intern will also spend some time working on federal issues, this includes legislative tracking and analyzing. While the internship is a wonderful opportunity to experience both levels of advocacy (state and federal), the bulk of the work will be state-focused.

REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates that are working toward a graduate or postgraduate degree, such as a JD, MPP, MPA, or MPH with a health policy focus, are preferred. Candidates should also have:

  • At least 1 year of related experience or a combination of internship experience and course work
  • Academic and/or legal research and analysis skills are a plus
  • Graphic design skills and experience creating visual materials are a plus
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc)

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Intern is expected to work 18.50 hours per week
  • This is a hybrid position. The intern must work out of the AAFP DC office one day a week.
  • Intern must provide supervisor with weekly reports on project status
