Job Description

Fincantieri Marinette Marine, a Fincantieri Marine Group Company, is a progressive shipyard specializing in building ships for the United States Navy. We currently have an opportunity fora Director of Engineering at our Washington, DC, location.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and acts as the Director of the Naval Design. He/she will support the COO to create the vision for the engineering team and for managing the change toward a process-orientated culture. The focus of this group, which will be primarily located in our Washington DC office, will be ship concept design, new program development, feasibility studies, class design services, technical specifications, proposal development, and research and development. This team will supplement our current engineering staff located in Marinette, Wisconsin, and work closely with our existing program offices, business development team and estimating group.

Split between ship design and ship's payload, FMM anticipates this new team to be at the forefront of our technical and design efforts. Its proximity to our customers and leading naval technical leaders will help us to anticipate market needs and provide accelerated support. Additionally, it will take the lead in building and maintaining our relationships with universities, research laboratories, and industry partners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties to include, but not limited to

  • Responsible for all management duties associated with a team of engineers and designers
  • Proposal development for ship designs, R D, etc., in support of business development efforts and customer requests
  • Build relationships and coordinate with research partners, including universities and labs
  • Requires frequent travel to support the shipyard teams, research partners such as labs and universities etc.
  • Work closely to coordinate efforts between the Advanced Naval Systems Technical Leader and Ship Design teams, as well as the core engineering teams at FMM, ACE, FBS
  • Maintain awareness of the latest advancements in engineering and science associated with ship design and production, as well as related fields
  • Abide by and enforce all organizational policies and procedures.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. When entering the shipyard, the work environment is not climate-controlled and there is exposure to moving equipment, etc.

PAY RANGE: $163,072.00 - $252,720.00

This range represents the overall market pay rate for candidates who meet the necessary qualifications and experience requirements for this role. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as experience, education, and performance.

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPEREINCE:

  • Master's degree in Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering, Industrial or Mechanical engineering. Master's degree desirable.
  • 15 years or more working in a shipbuilding, ship design, and supervisory/management experience required
  • Previous experience leading an engineering transformation that involved adding stage-gates and milestones to multi-year projects required
  • Previous experience in an early stage design development environment, including proposal development required
  • Must have familiarity with the US Navy, and other, R D programs, such that the candidate can find funding sources, develop working relationships, create proposals, and execute research within FMM
  • Solid understanding of lean manufacturing techniques; previous experience with obtaining quality certifications required
  • Detailed and in-depth knowledge of statistical methods/mathematical calculations to determine manufacturing processes, staff requirements, and production standards. Must have working knowledge of reading and interpreting production drawings and product models.
  • Knowledge of shipbuilding work flow, material flow, production process, performance reporting requirement preferred.
