The System Senior Director, Nursing Excellence, Magnet Strategy & Professional Governance is responsible for the direction and leadership of operational, financial, programmatic and personnel activities across Carilion Clinic as it relates to Nursing Excellence programs and Professional Governance. This includes establishing, meeting and continuously monitoring the goals and objectives while maintaining alignment with the strategic goals and objectives for Carilion Clinic. While the range of duties and responsibilities is broad and varied, the position's major responsibility is directing the day-to-day operations, data analysis, budgeting, financial management, and human resource management of the Nursing Excellence Programs and Professional Governance, working closely with a variety of stakeholders, coordinating the activities of Magnet, Pathways to Excellence and Professional Governance across the enterprise.
The System Senior Director, Nursing Excellence, Magnet Strategy & Professional Governance has broad expertise in the delivery of nursing professional practice, including models for care delivery and models of professional practice. The Director is responsible for enterprise-wide efforts around developing, implementing and enhancing conceptual models that drive professional nursing practice at Carilion Clinic.
Provides leadership and oversight for the Magnet recognition program, Pathways to Excellence Program and Professional Governance and is responsible for retaining associated program recognitions by the American Nurses Credentialing Center by assessing enterprise readiness, and ensuring improvement strategies to meet program criteria are formulated and implemented. Maintains accountability to oversee the development and completion of the Magnet & Pathways re-designation application, annual report submissions, site visit surveys and serves as Carilion Clinic's Magnet/Pathways to Excellence and Professional Governance lead.
The System Senior Director, Nursing Excellence, Magnet Strategy & Professional Governance provides leadership to program dedicated staff and has responsibility as an influential leader to all Carilion Clinic as it relates to Nursing Excellence and associated recognition programs. The System Senior Director assists leaders throughout the organization to ensure nurses are informed and updated on an ongoing basis about program initiatives, developments and progress.
Serves as the programmatic and operational leader for Magnet, Pathways to Excellence and Professional Governance and is responsible to the System Nursing Practice Administrator, System Chief Nursing Officer and works closely with Carilion Clinic employees and leaders.

What We Require:


Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master's in Nursing, Healthcare, Administration, or related field required.
Experience: 5-7 years of relevant progressive leadership experience Current regulatory, accreditation, and Joint Commission experience in a Magnet organization within the past five (3-5) years
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Commonwealth of Virginia Nursing License required. Certification from specialty nursing organization preferred
Other Minimum Qualifications:

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to interpret and communicate data
  • Strong meeting facilitation skills
  • Solid skill set with regards to using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet computer software, and data analysis
