Two positions available: One will be Roanoke-based at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and one based at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.


Manages the program in collaboration with the System Senior Director, Nursing Excellence, Magnet Strategy & Professional Governance, Nursing Practice Administrator and System CNO. Ensures materials and projects are implemented within appropriate time frames. Focus is on the achievement of organizational goals related to nursing excellence and Pathways to Excellence designation. The Pathways Program Manager serves as the Pathway to Excellence program manager at Carilion Clinic, collaborates with the System Senior Director, Nursing Excellence, Magnet Strategy & Professional Governance to oversee the Pathways to Excellence program (s). The Manager leads and collaborates with nursing and inter-professional colleagues in the Magnet designation processes and related performance improvement activities. The Manager serves as an internal expert on Pathway standards and requirements and leads the organizational efforts to engage nurses in the structures and processes to achieve and demonstrate nursing excellence.

  • Coordinates the attainment of Nursing Pathways to Excellence designation and subsequent recertification; aligns strategic plan with Pathways/Nursing Excellence Model.
  • Leads multidisciplinary teams to incorporate components and sources of evidence when executing plan.
  • Manages systems for tracking and evaluating Pathways to Excellence Program. Performs analysis to establish a baseline measurement of site(s) position in relation to Pathways principles and standards; identifies gaps that would prevent the site from obtaining Pathways to Excellence status.
  • Formulates plans to eliminate gaps and deficiencies; identifies opportunities for improvement in meeting full compliance with the regulatory agencies.
  • Reviews timelines for each step of the Pathways designation and re-designation process; ensures deadlines are achieved.
  • Coordinates teams to work on the Pathways to excellence preparation process; encourages staff nurse participation.
  • Prepares and organizes documentation required for a successful site visit and coordinates all communication; ensures data collection and analysis related to designation.
  • Collaborates with clinical and non-clinical department heads to cultivate consistent and effective communication; ensures fluence and clarity of all developed content and consistency in presentation of written materials and other standardized content.
  • In collaboration with Nursing, Medical, and Quality Leadership, coordinates clinical intervention compliance activities and manages quality metrics related to the patient experience, nursing care delivery, regulatory agency mandates and the Nursing Excellence program.
  • Facilitates a collaborative governance structure that gives professionals within the nursing team a voice regarding issues that affect their practice.
  • Applies Quality/Process Improvement methodology such as Lean, Six Sigma, PDSA, DMAIC and SBAR.
  • Evaluates the impact of changes in clinical practice and supports innovation to improve care delivery and resources in the environment of practice.
  • Acts as a resource to nursing staff related to the Pathways to Excellence Program.
  • Serves as a resource to help meet the needs of patient-family focused care.
  • Serves as chair of the Pathways to Excellence Champions. Ensures outcomes are progressing to the level of nursing excellence depicted in the nursing strategic plan.
  • Supports a structure that ensures outcomes consistent with the Pathways to Excellence re-designation process.

What We Require:


Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing required. Master's in Nursing preferred.
Experience: Five (5) years clinical nursing required Two (2) years in quality or clinical education preferred Experience with writing for publications, academic development preferred
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Commonwealth of Virginia Nursing License required Certification from specialty nursing organization preferred
Other Minimum Qualifications:

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to interpret and communicate data
  • Strong meeting facilitation skills
  • Solid skill set with regards to using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet computer software, and data analysis
