Overview

An exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant 2 or Senior Research Assistant position in the field of immunology is available in Dr. Joshua Moreau’s laboratory within Oregon Health & Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute. Dr. Moreau’s research program is exploring the biology of tissue resident lymphocytes and how these cells contribute to cancer pathogenesis and inflammatory skin disease. Under general supervision, you will support research activities by assisting investigators with experiments, preparation of research tools/reagents, and laboratory organization. Typical procedures include human tissue processing, cell culturing, single cell and spatial transcriptomic protocols, and research animal (mice) husbandry. The successful applicant will be expected to frequently work with research animals (mice) and human tissues, including patient biopsies. Opportunities to develop independent research projects may be available especially for the Senior Research Assistant position. A minimum two year commitment to this position is requested.

Assist laboratory research:

  • Under general supervision or independently participates in research execution of laboratory experiments and performs other general laboratory techniques, including processing of human tissue samples.
  • Participate with some design of experiments or research studies and procedures to achieve project objectives
  • Supports organization and basic tasks associated with animal husbandry and in vivo experimentation
  • Contributes to data analysis

Laboratory Organization and Compliance:

  • Responsible for managing project samples and ensure project data is properly recorded and stored
  • Organizes program work space
  • Manage project protocols and compliance. Independently interacts with external research sponsor representatives as applicable. Aid in the submission of specific protocols to the Institutional Biosafety Committee and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and other regulatory review boards.
  • Picks up clinical samples

Additional duties as assigned by project leader or laboratory manager.


Responsibilities

Education & experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree with major courses in relevant field (RA2) and 1 year of relevant experience (SRA) OR equivalent combination of training and experience

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience handling chemical and biologically hazardous materials
  • Experience with basic biomedical research techniques (ie cell culture)
  • Experience handling laboratory animals
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
  • Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new and innovative processes quickly
  • Ability to work with laboratory animals (mice) and human tissue samples
  • Ability to provide a time commitment of at least 2 years

Qualifications
  • Experience with immunology research techniques (cell culture, flow cytometry)
  • Experience with R and computational analysis
  • Experience handling laboratory animals
  • Experience handling chemical and biologically hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of policy and regulations applicable to the laboratory, including but not limited to safety
