We are seeking a Distribution Manager to join our hard working and fast-paced team. The Distribution Manager works collaboratively with other departments or bakeries, manages and leads a 24/7 shipping and transportation operation; ensuring timely, accurate and safe delivery of bakery products to sales depots and other bakery divisions. Provides leadership, training and oversight to department personnel to ensure company operating standards and business goals are met.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage and lead Franz Portland’s shipping and transportation operation, ensuring timely, accurate and safe delivery of bakery products to sales depots and other FFB divisions.
  • Schedule and manage two distinct groups of employees, transportation drivers (Teamsters) and checkers (Bakers Union); including compliance with DOT regulations, FMCSA requirements, and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Determine and implement the most efficient use of trucking and labor, limiting expenses while meeting target delivery times.
  • Support and maintain a safe work environment by stressing the importance of safe work practices, promoting accident prevention, and resolving potential hazards in a timely manner.
  • Ensures work surroundings are maintained in a clean, neat, and safe manner.
  • Responsible for ensuring that shipping and transport personnel are trained and follow all accounting and documentation procedures as established by the company.
  • Tasked with ensuring that shipping coordinates with production management and production supervisors on any overages, shortages, or product quality issues.
  • Ensures all employees are properly trained in all job tasks and the corresponding safety procedures of those tasks.
  • Serves as the bridge between sales and the bakery’s production team. Providing excellent service to sales by working with production to meet customer demand.
  • Addresses personnel issues and operations mistakes, issuing corrective action as needed.
  • Investigates transport accidents and ensures that all company and federal policies are followed when an accident occurs.
  • Responsible for managing the budget of the distribution department.
  • Demonstrates the core values of Franz Family Bakeries.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
  • Six years or more of success as a Shipping Manager or Shipping Foreperson preferred
  • Commitment to safety and proven record of safety success among employees who were under your supervision
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good computer skills with proficiency in Excel
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations
  • Previous experience in a union environment is a plus
  • Ability to work as a team member essential for success in this role
