Position Summary
The Director of the Institute for Metropolitan Studies, reporting to the dean of the College of Urban and Public Affairs, provides leadership for activities, projects and functions of the Institute.
The Director oversees a staff that includes faculty fellows, research staff, administrative staff and students.
The Director is expected to collaborate with the Institute’s Board of Directors, composed of civic and campus leaders, to create and implement effectively an annual work plan focused on creating knowledge and partnerships to advance the overall vitality of the greater Portland-Southwest Washington region. The Director is responsible for organizing and overseeing all projects of the Institute, raising funds through grants and contracts to support the Institute’s mission: Providing the Portland and metropolitan region with the tools and information policymakers and citizens need to advance the economic, environmental, and social goals of the region.
The Director is expected to maintain relationships with faculty, staff, and students within the College of Urban and Public Affairs and with others at PSU as necessary to execute the mission.
This position is renewable, contingent upon performance and availability of funding.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in planning, public policy, economics, urban studies, other social science disciplines, or related disciplinary area.

  • At least eight years experience working in a policy analysis role in the area of planning, urban studies, urban policy, transportation, economic development, or a related field.

  • Knowledge of tools for analysis of public policy, including relevant data and analytical tools.

  • Experience in working with and building collaborations with groups that include elected officials, government and nonprofit leaders and professionals, business leaders and alliances, philanthropic institutions, and community-based organizations and initiatives.

  • Experience with community engagement, leadership building, problem-solving, and public policy development.

  • Ability to lead in a complex, dynamic environment that includes the Portland-Southwest Washington region as well as in the administrative systems within PSU.

  • Ability to be an effective multi-tasker skilled at driving progress and completion on a variety of projects, assignments and activities.

  • Experience in executive leadership that includes, but is not limited to, human resource management, financial and budget administration, assessment and strategic planning.

  • Commitment to equity as part of organizational mission and executive leadership.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in planning, public policy, economics, urban studies, other social science disciplines or related disciplinary area or at least twelve years of experience in a policy analysis role.

  • Experience in preparing and submitting proposals for extramural funding including grants and contracts.

Work Days/HoursNormally, Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm, however evening and weekend hours will be required.
Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement
Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity.
The starting annual salary for this position will be between $97,104 and $114,120 (between $72,828 and $85,590 at .75 FTE) but may be negotiated above this range dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
