Overview

Primary responsibilities include cohort scoping, coordination of subject enrollments with clinic staff, patient consenting, data and sample collection, processing and distribution of these resources, and maintenance of study-related documentation. Other tasks may be assigned as needed to meet the objectives of the OHSU Knight BioLibrary. The Research Assistant will be expected to collaborate closely with other teammates to complete assigned tasks efficiently.

  • Subject enrollment & specimen collection: identifying and consenting participating patients; keeping detailed and accurate documentation of activities; extracting clinical data from patient records and documenting annotations in database(s). Review operating room schedules for surgical cases meeting of interest; work closely with surgical staff and pathologist assistants to obtain surgical tissue. Completed associated paperwork for all samples collected, including assigning unique accession number to samples. Process tissue according to BioLibrary procedures including use of dissection tools and chemical preservatives.
  • Reporting & administrative study support: collecting data and developing reports; maintaining required records; ordering supplies; written and verbal communication with patients, OHSU staff, and external clients
  • Coordination of Biolibrary projects for researchers: includes meeting with researcher, providers and other clinical support staff to determine feasibility of research projects and workflows within OHSU clinics.
  • Other tasks supporting the department: attending meetings; reviewing and preparing documents; other duties as assigned

Responsibilities

Education & experience:

  • Bachelor's in relevant field OR
  • Associate's AND 2 years of relevant experience OR
  • 3 years of relevant experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time.
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems.
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Access, Word, and PowerPoint) on Window OS
  • Must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills both on the phone and in person.
  • Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with courses in human biology, medicine, research ethics, or similar fields
  • Working with patients, especially in a clinical or research setting.
  • Conducting consent dialogues.
  • Handling, processing, and shipping human biospecimens.
  • Handling sensitive or confidential information.
  • Working with a LIMS or similar databases.
  • Working in a small team.
  • Keeping accurate written and electronic records.
  • Communicating professionally by phone and email.
  • Using MS Office Suite.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Advanced skills with MS Excel and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with EHR systems, especially Epic.
  • Working knowledge of research ethics, principles of informed consent, and HIPAA regulations.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, especially relating to oncology.
  • Practical phlebotomy training.
