Position Overview

The R&D Lab Technician I is responsible for performing routine and non-routine testing and analyses using appropriate technical equipment and instruments under laboratory conditions. The R&D Lab Technician I will mix formulations and evaluate films prepared from them. The position will support testing for the Research and Development team in accordance to established test methods. Additionally, the R&D Lab Technician I will support the color group by taking color measurements, performing visual evaluation, and creating color variants, as well as maintaining color formulas in the color database.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and non-routine tests and analyses using the appropriate technical equipment and test methods.
  • Support new product development, new color development, change qualifications and product improvement testing requirements.
  • Collect and process data for analysis. Organize and maintain accurate information in technical database.
  • Formulate and update custom colors in a timely manner to meet customer's expectations.
  • Interact with Product Management and R&D to ensure timely delivery of colored samples.
  • Update and maintain color formulas, pigments, and pre-dispersions in color database.
  • Process, analyze and resolve customer color complaints.
  • Develop overall knowledge of internal test methods, as well as follow through the guidelines to support custom color matching process.
  • Collaborate with Operations to ensure a smooth process in color scale up.
  • Manage and maintain lab inventory
  • Follow safety protocols to operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot lab equipment.
  • Follow safety protocols to routinely maintain the wet lab, manage chemical inventory, lab supplies and proper waste management.
  • Practice safe work habits, including complying with all safety, health and environmental rules and regulations.
Requirements:
  • Associate degree in science degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or other related scientific discipline or equivalent mix of education and work experience
  • Minimum 1 year working in a lab and operating test equipment.
  • Familiar with X-Rite Spectrophotometer, color printer, laminator, plotter, or similar instruments
  • Familiar with color match formulation software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office ®
  • Pass the Munsell Color test. Good color acuity.
  • Strong communication skills (Listening, Verbal, Written, Presentation, Inter-personal)
  • Ability to effectively read/write/speak English.

Additional Qualification (a plus but not required)

  • Prior experience in chemical formulation of PVC, urethans, acrylic clear coats and/or pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA).\
  • Formal relevant education beyond Associate degree level.

Pay Transparency

The current pay rate for this position is $23.00 – $27.00/hr. Rate of pay will depend on factors such as market conditions and location, job-related knowledge and skills, education, training and experience. If hired, employment will be at will. The Company reserves the right to modify pay, as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program, at any time.
