Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Specialist, Genetic Counseling.

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for assisting patients and their families in understanding genetic illnesses, as well as serving as educator and resource person for other health care professionals and the general public.

Job Responsibilities:

    • Provides genetic counseling for patients and their families who are at high risk of having genetic disorders. Effectively counsels patients and their families.
    • Interviews patients and their families to review family history, assess medical conditions, provides individualized risk assessment, and individual and group counseling to patients and their families. Utilizing proper interview techniques, effectively interviews patients and their families.
    • Directs patients and their families to appropriate community agencies for long-term care or long-term follow-up counseling. Effectively directs patients and their families to community agencies when appropriate. Seeks out community-based resources in order to better serve our patients.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of the health care team and to take initiative and leadership as appropriate.
    • Attending treatment planning conferences/case conferences, establishing referral systems, developing disease specific counseling materials (letters, education materials, etc.).
    • Develops educational program and protocols for medical students and residents, genetics fellows and genetics counseling students. Takes an active role in educating all of the interdisciplinary team members regarding the role of genetics in providing services to our patients.
    • Exhibit advanced leadership and clinical or scholarship expertise and by doing the following: establish new genetics services (expanding to provide services for new indication, new location, etc.), create or update standard operating protocols related to clinical responsibilities, devise and successfully implement preparation/writing, peer reviewed manuscripts and/or case reports, strategic planning, outreach, quality improvement, and participate in educational activities.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Masters Degree in genetic counseling from an accredited program. Board certification as a genetic counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). At least six (6) years professional experience as a practicing genetic counselor..

Required Licenses: Certified Genetic Counselor

Preferred Qualifications:
Cardiac genetic counseling experience is preferred. Experience working with multicultural audiences preferred.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $81,325.15 - $135,541.73 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
