Job Description:
The Wall Street Journal is looking for a motivated and creative Page Designer to join our award-winning team of editorial designers. You will be part of a team that provides designs and layout across all of our news sections You will help provide focus and shape to pages and stories alongside multiple stakeholders, including other visual journalists, reporters and editors. You will work closely on assignments provided by section editors to produce visually compelling layouts that reflect WSJ's journalistic integrity.
You will
  • Stays on top of the news schedule and priorities throughout the day.
  • Reviews advertising layouts and helps develop a visual plan for each story and page.
  • Works closely with an art director to determine how best to tell stories visually and prioritize how to display stories.
  • Produces creative layouts and presentation of stories within the boundaries of established styles and design.
  • Receives daily assignments and manages time to meet strict edition deadlines.
  • Clearly communicates with art director needs and alerts to potential issues
  • Assists other team members with their assignments.
  • Adheres to and respects established styles.
  • Delivers pages that reflect the high journalistic standards of the WSJ.
  • Fills in for art director when needed.

You have
  • One to five years experience in news layout
  • A passion for journalism and excellent news judgment
  • Must have good and demonstrable design and typography skills
  • Ability to assist reporters and editors understand best practices for visual storytelling.
  • Self-motivated and a willingness to learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment.
  • Excellent communication and time-management skills.
  • Experience with business news and charting a bonus.
  • An understanding of XML and CSS.
  • Software Requirements: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, G Suite,. Experience with EidosMedia's Methode publishing system a plus.

The position will be based in New York, though other locations will be considered under the right circumstances, and will report to the Deputy Design Chief for News.

Pay Range: $85,000 - $95,000
