Position Summary
The Senior Scientist position will be responsible for providing support to research programs over a capability area centered on Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) for Department of Defense (DoD) and U.S. Government (USG) sponsors, in both field and laboratory settings. Responsibilities will include working with a multidisciplinary team that develops and tests novel materials, methods, and systems for chemical and biological defense applications.
Responsibilities will involve the integration of programmatic, technical, systems engineering, cost, schedule, and performance and resource elements of assigned projects. Additionally, the Senior Microbiologist will help identify and develop business opportunities that support DoD and other USG sponsors.
The primary place of duty will be Melbourne, FL. Periodic travel will be required to University of Nebraska System Campuses, NSRI Field Offices in Nebraska, Virginia and Maryland and other locations based on project needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide technical contributions as a senior scientist regarding all aspects of biological defense and participate as a member of a team to accomplish all stated and implied project related tasks.
  • Develop biological defense research, development, and testing capabilities at both NSRI and partner facilities to aid in the building of long-term strategic resources and the facilitation of immediate project needs.
  • Collaborate directly with project sponsors, stakeholders, University of Nebraska staff, and NSRI staff to develop and execute project plans, timelines, and strategies to facilitate successful completion of project goals.
  • Develop, execute, and defend the cost, scope, performance, and schedule for assigned projects
  • Report project status, written and orally, both internally and externally
  • Implement and manage change when necessary to meet project outputs
  • Execute and manage day-to-day laboratory duties associated with assigned projects
  • Lead and/or contribute to multiple projects simultaneously
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or molecular biology from an accredited university or college
  • 5+ years technical experience working in support of DoD, USG or related projects
  • 5+ years' experience creating protocols and conducting experiments in a laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics analysis principles and its application for next-generation sequencing genomic data analysis
  • Familiarity with project budgeting and tracking
  • Excellent written and oral skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience working as a part of a multi-functional team
  • Ability to achieve and maintain a DoD SECRET security clearance
Desired Qualifications
  • PhD degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry or molecular biology, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in molecular techniques in PCR and Next Gen Sequencing (Illumina-based platforms)
  • 5+ years of experience performing bioinformatics data analysis with new and existing analysis software; proficiency in programming languages.
  • Experience in CBRN related mission area
  • Current DoD security clearance
