Position Summary:
The Research Scientist position will be responsible for providing support to research programs over a capability area centered on Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) for Department of Defense (DoD) and U.S. Government (USG) sponsors, in both field and laboratory settings. Responsibilities will include working with a multidisciplinary team that develops and tests novel materials, methods, and systems for chemical and biological defense applications.
Primary place of duty will be the NSRI office in Melbourne, Florida. Secondary places of duty and travel requirements will be based on contractual, and project needs and may include NSRI facilities in Annapolis Junction, Maryland and Fredericksburg, Virginia; along with USG facilities as required by contract requirements. Periodical travel to NSRI and University of Nebraska facilities and campuses in Nebraska is also anticipated.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical contributions as a research scientist regarding all aspects of biological defense.
  • Develop biological defense research, development, and testing capabilities at both NSRI and partner facilities, to aid in the building of long-term strategic resources as well as the facilitation of immediate project needs.
  • Manage day-to-day tasks for maintaining laboratory operations.
  • Maintain proper laboratory documentation.
  • Perform in-depth technical studies requiring specialized skills or knowledge.
  • Conduct risk/benefit analysis of different technical choices or outcomes.
  • Provide independent reviews and summaries of technical and scientific literature.
  • Participate, present, and produce materials for working groups, workshops, and interagency forums to provide expertise and technical consultation.
  • Provide expertise on research and development processes.
  • Provide technical consultation and assessments on specific topics.
  • Ability to lead or contribute to multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to develop and deliver technical findings and communicate key data points to varied technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate effectively with project sponsors, stakeholders, University of Nebraska staff, and NSRI staff to develop and execute project plans, timelines, and strategies to facilitate successful completion of project goals.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Two or more years of experience in CWMD-related research programs.
  • Experience with biological sample analysis.
  • Experience working as part of a multi-functional team in a laboratory environment.
  • Ability to achieve and maintain a DoD SECRET level security clearance within a reasonable period.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Four or more years of experience in molecular biology techniques such as PCR and Next Generation Sequencing (Illumina-based platforms)
  • Four or more years of experience in following standardized protocols and conducting experiments in a laboratory environment.
  • Excellent written and oral skills.
  • Excellent organizations skills and record-keeping.
