PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Inpatient Services RN CAP 1 functions as an entry-point into the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP) for professional registered nurses. This role entails the provision and coordination of clinically proficient care, which includes the assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for a specific set of patients. It may also include delegating suitable tasks to direct patient care staff such as RNs, LVN/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians. Being a part of the nephrology healthcare team, this position contributes to decision-making, teaching, leadership functions, and quality improvement activities that enhance patient care results and program operations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
All duties and responsibilities must be executed in accordance with Fresenius Kidney Care policy, nursing practice standards, relevant contractual service agreements, and applicable state and federal regulations.

- All vital functions are carried out with guidance from the Supervisor, Educator, Preceptor or together with another Registered Nurse.
- Conducts consistent, systematic collection and analysis of patient data pre – during – post-treatment necessary for assigned patients. This includes making necessary adjustments or changes to the treatment plan and notifying the Supervisor, Physician, patient's primary nurse and others as appropriate.
- Assesses and collaborates on patient/family's primary learning needs to offer initial and ongoing education.
- Identifies aspects of patient status that differ from normal and reports to appropriate health team members for input. This includes but not limited to Supervisor, applicable physician, and the primary nurse of the contracted facility.
- Directs and provides safe effective patient care for assigned patients following all modality specific treatment procedures.
- Oversee the daily patient care needs and collaborates with direct and ancillary patient care staff as needed.
- Initializes and coordinates communication with FKC and non-FKC dialysis providers along with appropriate contracted facility personnel to ensure continuity of patient care.
- Implements, administers, monitors, and documents patient's response to prescribed intradialytic transfusions, this includes notifying adverse reactions to the physician and appropriate blood supplier in time.
- Administers medications as prescribed and documents appropriate medical justification and effectiveness.
- Initiates and aids with emergency response measures.
- Acts as a resource for the healthcare team, participates in staff training and orientation of new staff as assigned.
- May be asked to provide specialized nursing care instruction to hospital/facility staff based on contractual agreements.
- May be assigned to assist in an outpatient facility on an as-needed basis.
- Required to fulfill CAP requirements to advance.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

- The role provides direct patient care regularly involving strenuous lifting, moving of patients and helping with ambulation. Equipment aids and/or colleagues may give assistance.
- Frequent, prolonged standing periods are required, and the employee must be capable of bending over.
- Occasionally, with aid, the employee may need to move equipment weighing up to 200 lbs, and may lift chemical and water solutions of up to 30 lbs. up to a height of 5 feet.
- The workplace is typical of a healthcare facility with controlled air temperatures and moderate noise levels.
- Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials may occur.
- May be asked to execute essential job functions at other locations with similar physical demands and workplace conditions as outlined above.
- Day-to-day labor includes, desk work, computer work, interaction with patients, facility/hospital staff, and physicians.
- The job requires travel to training and meeting sites and between assigned facilities.
- Participation in an on-call rotation, night, weekend, holiday or as outlined by individual program requirements is required.

SUPERVISION:
Assigned to oversee Patient Care Technicians/LVN/LPNs/RNs in the capacity of a designated Nurse in Charge, after meeting all following criteria:

- Successful completion of all FKC education and modality-specific training requirements for new hires.
- Minimum of 9 months experience working as an RN
- 6 months experience in acute dialysis as an RN

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:

- Current and valid state licensure.
- Current or swift completion of CPR BLS Certification
- Must fulfill the practical requirements in all states of employment.

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

- Entry level for RNs with under 12 months of Nephrology Nursing experience in the last two years (preferably).
- Minimum 9 months' experience as a Registered Nurse, 12 months (preferably).
- 6 months' acute dialysis experience (preferably)
- Experience in Hemodialysis and/or ICU (preferably).
