The Polymer Engineer will support the JETS II contract in Houston, Texas.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support various NASA programs by providing nonmetallic and fibrous materials expertise for the selection of soft goods exposed to different atmospheres, high vacuum, and extreme temperatures. This support applies to any type of soft goods: semi-rigid plastics, thin films, textiles, and their finishing treatments.
  • Provide technical leadership on nonmetallic material and fibrous materials selection to use in Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) development for various NASA programs.
  • Act as a primary reviewer and approver for NASA Material Usage Agreements (MUL) to ensure materials are compliant to be used in specific test conditions for testing performed in NASA thermal vacuum chambers.
  • Provide technical support related to nonmetallic and fibrous materials for R&D activities under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) NASA programs.
  • Review NASA reports, requirement documents, proposals, conference papers, and journal articles related to nonmetallic and fibrous materials.
  • Support NASA Materials and Processes (M&P) engineers for the evaluation and selection of nonmetallic and fibrous materials.
  • Support research and development of nonmetallic and fibrous materials (i.e., films, textiles, nonwovens) for crew clothing, space suit fabrics, spacecraft interior, and inflatable structures, as well as hygiene and sanitation for lunar and Martian environments.
  • Perform testing and characterization on nonmetallic materials as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Must have 2+ years of recent experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Extensive knowledge on polymer structure-properties relationship. Familiar with high-performance polymers that are commonly in film, foam, or fiber form, such as PTFE, PVDF, Aramids, Polyimide, PEEK, PBI, etc.
  • Experience in polymer characterization methods, such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, and SEM/EDS. Familiar with polymer testing standards.

DESIRED:

  • Understanding or experience in textiles.
  • Experience with textiles for structural applications.
  • Previous experience supporting a NASA project.

WORK LOCATION:

  • This position is located onsite.
  • This position offers a 9/80 schedule, every other Friday off.
  • This position may require some travel.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS REQUIRED:

All Bastion employees must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen; some contracts require participation in periodic random drug and alcohol screening programs.

  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Must have a strong work ethic and must be safety culture oriented.
  • Must be organized with good time management skills.
  • Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.
  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time).
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
  • Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
