Job Summary

UT Southwestern is in search of a skilled and experienced Design Team Engineer for their Facilities Planning team. Provides an essential in-house capability to assist with preliminary design support to provide advice on space use and renovation options related to campus standards. The position may also assist in developing scopes of work for capital project requests before engaging with outside consultants. Hands-on staff support is a capability our customers have repeatedly requested to help guide them in developing space use plans, researching existing conditions, sketching potential solutions, creating documents to communicate requirements to the customers leadership team and eventually to AE consultants or the Renovation Project Management staff.

Work Location: Dallas Campus

Shift Requirement: Monday-Friday, Days

Remote Work Option: 1 day a week with manager’s approval.

Minimum Experience and Education Qualifications

  • Requires bachelor’s degree in engineering or related design field.
  • Requires five (5) years of professional level experience in a related industry field.

Preferred Experience and Education

  • Extensive construction renovation and design work experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree to be in engineering with mechanical or electrical focus.
  • Engineering Design Project Management experience.
  • Process and Standards Development experience.
  • Construction Project Management experience.
  • Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) Design experience.
  • Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) Specification Development experience.
  • Active certification through CSI as Construction Documents Technologist (CDT).
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Active Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) Membership.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Work requires exercise of considerable judgment in application of procedures, techniques, or practices to work problems.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Autodesk AutoCAD is preferred, plus a willingness to learn software specific to UT Southwestern preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Work requires communication with departmental representatives and outside vendors.

Job Duties

  • Supports the Construction Project Managers in the management of the engineering consultants who prepare the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing specifications for projects.
  • Reads and review plans and contract documents related to coordination of design projects and standardization efforts.
  • Manages AE standardization efforts as it relates to Life Safety and Codes in drawings and master specifications.
  • Supports the Construction Project Managers for coordination with vendors including AE consultants.
  • Performs necessary site visits to ensure adherence to design guidelines and specifications of design projects.
  • Coordinates with AE consultants all necessary design standards documentation to adhere to design guidelines and specifications on contract documents.
  • Proactively seeks to understand the needs of our customers.
  • Performs research, provides support, guidance, recommendation deliver the highest standards of service.
  • Evaluates, recommends, and executes continuous improvements to policies, standards, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
