Our pharmacy technician roles have recently seen a significant shift, transitioning from a focus on transactions to prioritizing patient care.

Our pharmacy technician training program provides courses, learning activities, and resources to equip you with the essential and advanced competencies you need to prepare for certification.

  • According to state and federal laws, assist the pharmacist under direct supervision in performing pharmacy tasks following company policies and procedures.
  • Utilize pharmacy systems to gather patient and prescription information and manage prescriptions. If PTCB certified, help and guide pharmacy technicians in using pharmacy systems, and assist cashiers with the pharmacy registers.
  • Deliver a unique and pleasant customer experience.

Customer Engagement 

Engage customers and patients by welcoming them warmly and providing product and service assistance. Resolve customer issues and answer inquiries to ensure a positive experience.

  • Share and model outstanding customer service practices to all team members to deliver a unique and pleasant customer experience, emphasizing interpersonal skills (such as greetings, eye contact, courtesy) and Walgreens service traits (such as offering proactive help and understanding customer needs).
  • Cultivate strong relationships with our most valued customers.

Operational Duties

Work under the pharmacist’s guidance according to state, federal, and company policies. Comply with the Walgreens Pharmacy Code of Conduct.

  • Perform tasks assigned by the Pharmacy Manager, Staff Pharmacist, and Store Manager, including using pharmacy systems for accurate entry of patient and drug data, filling prescriptions, verifying medication correctness, and checking potential interactions. Assist pharmacists with scheduling and workflow maintenance.
  • Report prescription errors immediately to the on-duty pharmacist and follow company protocols related to pharmacy errors and the Quality Improvement Program.
  • Follow Walgreens’ Good Faith Dispensing policy for all prescription dispensing activities.
  • Manage related sales on the assigned cash register, collect necessary cash, and assist customers in the OTC aisle when possible to find products.
  • Handle telephone calls not requiring the pharmacist’s personal attention, including calls to physicians.
  • Quickly and efficiently resolve manual claims for third-party prescription services and perform other clerical tasks as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager.
  • Aid in pharmacy inventory management, including ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing pharmaceutical shipments. Understand company asset protection techniques and file claims for discrepancies, errors, or damaged goods concerning Rx medications.
  • Assist pharmacists in administering clinical services, including patient sample collection and labeling, and support in coordinating with Walgreens healthcare clinics and other providers.
  • Contribute to developing good relationships with the local medical community, including medical detailing and outreach to health organizations, retirement homes, and forums for growth opportunities.
  • Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the Pharmacy Department and manage supply levels.
  • Adhere to company policies, maintain respectful relationships with coworkers.
  • Complete special assignments and tasks as directed.

Training & Personal Development

Achieve and sustain PTCB certification through the designated training program and/or state-required certification/registration. Obtain PTCB certification for promotion to senior technician.

  • Participate in requested training sessions and pursue continuing education credits. Keep current with healthcare and pharmacy knowledge and advancements.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six months of experience in a retail environment.
  • Previous experience with Walgreens.
  • Proficient math skills necessary for accurate prescription filling, including counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Familiarity with store inventory control.
  • PTCB certification is preferred.
