Registered Nurse - RN Summary of Position: The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to patients living with CF. MGH’s CF program has earned national accreditation by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the world’s leader in the search for a cure for CF. The staff nurse is responsible for assuring competent, compassionate, individualized nursing care for patients and their families in the ambulatory care setting. The goal of this position is to ensure the appropriate coordination of care with practice leadership, members of the patient care team, and the patient to establish and ensure requests are processed as needed and to ensure exemplary customer service. Principal duties and responsibilities: The staff nurse for the Cystic Fibrosis Program is encouraged to perform activities such as, outside medical record review, communication with referring health care providers, authorization and scheduling, patient and nursing education in sophisticated medical therapies, and ongoing care of outpatients with cystic fibrosis. - Provides competent, compassionate nursing care based on scientific principles and the use of nursing process. - Screens and triages patient referrals, phone calls, and urgent appointment requests. - Coordinates the follow up of test results with provider guidance - Handles prescription refills, injections, and point of care testing. - Processes medication refills including prior approvals. - Observes, reports, and documents relevant patient information in electronic medical records. - Communicates the plan of care and other pertinent information with other patient care team members. - Provides patient/family education and could go to inpatient units for any requested education. - Participates in and contributes to performance improvement activities. - Interprets hospital and departmental policies to nurses and other health team members. - Provides input to the practice leadership regarding practice needs. - Participates in practice and other committees for formulation of nursing, practice, and hospital policies and procedures. - Provides and maintains a therapeutic environment for patients and families - Collaborates with practice leadership to identify their developmental level of practice and appropriate learning experiences to enhance development. - Contributes to relevant committees, professional meetings, continuing educational and/or formal academic programs. - Responsible for locating and connecting with community resources for patients and their families. - Participate in occasional cross coverage for General Pulmonary triage. - 1-2 times per/year to travel to conferences. Qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree required. - Current licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Massachusetts. - .Previous clinical nursing experience in a complex medical care setting/ ABILITIES/ Competencies required: - Professional, clinical, and healthcare management knowledge; time management skills; leadership abilities; interpersonal/communication skills; information systems/technology proficiency; critical thinking/decision making skills; personnel management skills; ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality; and knowledge of safety/compliance applicable to the position. Working conditions: Normal office conditions. May require attendance at meetings outside of regularly scheduled hours. Fiscal responsibility: Responsible for prudent fiscal management of program resources (e.g., supplies, telephones, etc.) and management of project budgets.
