The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) has been expanding Harvard University's reach beyond the traditional student and conventional classroom. What began as a series of courses for the local community has evolved into an accredited Harvard school serving adult learners around the globe, from over 115 countries. As our world transitions fully to the knowledge economy, DCE stands at the forefront of the greatest wave in education-that of open access and active learning.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Infrastructure and Support, the Senior Infrastructure Engineer plays a crucial role in building, maintaining, and securing DCE's networks and servers. The ideal candidate is excited to tackle a variety of tasks each day, comfortable working with diverse technologies, and enjoys troubleshooting all the issues that can arise when managing complex systems. The Infrastructure and Support teams are the backbone of DCE: keeping all systems running smoothly so our staff, administration, and faculty can help our students fulfill their dreams.
The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is tasked with critical responsibilities of building and managing network infrastructure, overseeing data centers and server builds, and ensuring the security and reliability of systems through sustained patching and vulnerability remediation.
  • Builds, configures, and maintains network infrastructure: This includes switches, routers, firewalls, A/V equipment, and wireless access points. Manages on-site data centers including servers, storage, and backup systems. Collaborates with AWS team for cloud environments. Follows best practices for scalability, reliability, and security.
  • System/server builds: Determines requirements based on stakeholder input, configures appropriate server VMs, installs OS and applies initial patches, configures base network, logging and security settings, applies required server hardening per university guidelines and best practices, and may install base services (i.e., web servers, middleware).
  • Security and patching: Engages with the senior security engineer and SISDPO to implement and execute cybersecurity strategies, policies, and procedures. Oversees regular patch deployment across all platforms. Works with stakeholders to test and validate patches prior to production deployment.
  • Vulnerability Management: Responsible for all logging, aggregation monitoring, and reporting. Reviews all findings with the senior security engineer and SISDPO. Verifies that all systems are appropriately configured and responding. Uses Splunk to build dashboards and reports to provide timely surveillance of and response to threats.
  • Collaborates on infrastructure projects and upgrades with other IT teams. Provides support to technical staff for infrastructure-related issues. Maintains relationships with vendors and university partners.
  • Mentorship: provide routine and ongoing mentorship to junior engineering staff. Deliver guidance, share insights from experience to help mentees navigate the complexities and nuances of infrastructure engineering. Foster a supportive environment where junior staff can accelerate their learning curves, enhance problem-solving abilities, and build confidence.

Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Ability to create infrastructure in AWS or other could environments using infrastructure-as-code techniques.
  • Extensive experience in system administration of Linux servers.
  • Experience with network administration and engineering.
  • Understanding of security best practices.
  • Experience with large storage devices.
  • AWS certification or certification in another cloud platform.
  • Experience with Red Hat or Ubuntu Linux system administration.
  • Ability to use configuration management tools such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or Terraform to provision cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Experience with Windows Server and Active Directory administration.
  • Experience maintaining Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MS SQL database servers.
  • Experience with Nagios or other enterprise monitoring systems.
  • Experience maintaining Cisco or Aruba network devices.
  • SAN and NAS knowledge, including iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NFS.
  • Experience with load balancing and high-availability solutions.
  • Experience with Aruba ClearPass or other enterprise network access control systems.
  • Experience maintaining a Duo MFA environment.
  • Experience with Infoblox or another enterprise DDI product.
  • Intermediate or advanced Python programming.
  • Experience with Git version control.
  • Experience with Atlassian products such as Confluence, Jira, Bitbucket.

The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) comprises four academic units serving about 30,000 domestic and international students annually, which allow Harvard to meet the learning needs of intellectually curious and highly motivated students from high school through retirement. Established in 1910, the Harvard Extension School (HES) offers access to Harvard faculty for a diverse community of adult learners, enrolling about 15,000 students. HES offers over 1,000 open enrollment courses - 85 percent of which are accessible online - and provides flexibility through noncredit, undergraduate, and graduate courses, including degrees, certificates, and a premedical program. The Harvard Summer School, founded in 1871, offers around 450 credit and noncredit courses both on the Harvard Campus and online, catering to 10,000 high school, college, and adult learners. Additionally, it offers more than 15 international study abroad programs, hosting up to 300 students each summer. Harvard DCE Professional & Executive Development delivers over 140 noncredit programs annually, reaching more than 3,600 participants through online platforms and its executive development center in Cambridge.
