Summary
The Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring proper accounting policies and principles are followed in accordance with GAAP. This role participates in and oversees the organization’s day to day accounting operations, is responsible for month and year end close activity, trains and motivates accounting staff members and ensures that the department operates efficiently without sacrificing accuracy. The Senior Accountant also provides technical knowledge surrounding non-profit revenue recognition and procedures related to federal/state contracts and grants, cost accounting and Uniform Guidelines
Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Expectations
The essential functions are representative, but not all-inclusive, of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform this job:
  • Provide day-to-day accounting and finance support across the full range of accounting activities. Supervise accounting work and prepare/review/approve accounting data entered by accounting team members
  • Fully understand the activity for the organizations divisions and services lines and the related month end accounting processes
  • Ensure financial systems and procedures are in place and implemented to support effective program implementation and clean audits
  • Ensure CRJ staff understand financial controls by using efficient processes and procedures; communicate and train staff as necessary
  • Support the Accounting Manager with overseeing all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems to ensure compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Support the Accounting Manager with the timely completion of the month-end by overseeing and preparing accruals, reconciliations and schedules for all balance sheet and profit and loss accounts, ensuring accounts are accurately stated, reconciled to the general ledger and that account details have proper back-up
  • Maintain the fixed asset, leases, and other current assets/liability schedules.
  • Support various A/R functions with efficiencies and software integration
  • Support various A/P functions with efficiencies and lease standards
  • Support the Client Specialist team in software integration, processing, reconciliations and internal controls relevant to client transactions
  • Provides technical knowledge surrounding non-profit revenue recognition and procedures related to federal/state contracts and grants, cost accounting and Uniform Guidelines
  • Assist in the preparation, review and compilation of financial schedules for Uniform Guidance (UG), financial statement and other audits, 990, Uniform Financial Reporting (UFR), 3ABC and other reports as necessary
  • Provide year end audit support for various PBCs
  • Work on other projects as assigned


  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college (CPA certification a plus)
  • Three to five years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, accounting principles and financial reporting
  • Not for Profit and/or grant accounting and regulations experience a plus
  • Demonstrated time management, problem-solving and attention to detail
  • Able to meet deadlines, without sacrifice of detail or accuracy
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and accounting software (experience in NetSuite is a plus)
  • Commitment to CRJ’s mission and values and an ability to model those values in relationship with colleagues and partners
  • Exposure to Federal form 990, MA Form PC, MA 3ABC and MA Uniform Financial report a plus
  • Ability to flex work schedule required to meet deadlines beyond routine workflow.
