GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Under general supervision, performs magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies using a magnetic resonance device that includes preparing patients, positioning, setting imaging parameters, performing computer processing and displaying images. Selects appropriate imaging protocol for patient studies. Performs quality assurance scans as required. Demonstrates the ability to work cohesively as a team member within the MRI Department. The incumbent will work closely with the MR physicist at the A.A. Martinos Center to test and troubleshoot pulse sequences unique to the Center. They will then be responsible to educate the PI’s about new sequences once they have been tested and released for use. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: · Learns pulse programming to troubleshoot problems that arise with unique pulse sequences used at the Martino’s Center. · Trains large investigator population on new and emergent pulse sequences that may enhance their research. · Works closely with the physicist at the Center to help educate the large Principal Investigator community about upcoming software and hardware changes. · Includes preparing patient, positioning, setting imaging parameters, performing computer processing and displaying images. · Performs scheduled quality control procedures on MRI scanner and other related equipment. Records QA results as required. Reports any potential equipment related problems to supervisor as necessary. · Prepares for and performs intravenous injection of MR contrast agents including the use of the MR compatible power injector. Understands and can communicate the possible contraindications as well as monitor for and respond to adverse reactions to MR contrast agents. Records all information regarding contrast injections appropriately. · Inserts IV catheters as needed. · Instructs patients and visitors in MR safety procedures. · Ensures adherence to safety practices by all persons entering the MRI area. · Reviews outpatient and/or inpatient schedules to confirm exams have been protocoled and reviewed for potential contra-indications. · Acts as final check point for patient safety and protocol clarification. · Communicates with Radiologist for protocol clarification when necessary. · Uses designated department protocols. If issues are observed within the designated protocol, reports them to the site supervisor and/or Quality Assurance Manager · Assists in the instruction of visitors and medical staff rotating through the area. Explains patient procedures, processing, equipment operation, safety practices, etc. · Mentors new staff and fellow technologists as necessary. · Adheres to MGH “Good-To-Go” policies and practices. · Reviews the MRI patient procedure screening form with the patient and completes the MRI staff specific questions. · Utilizes departmental specific tools to confirm contrast dosing, and patient safety through the use ofsuch tools as QPID, electronic dose calculators, image review (PACS) and other means designated by the department. · Maintains a neat work environment, including patient care areas, MR scan rooms, MR control rooms and reading areas. · Monitors appropriate inventory and par levels of necessary supplies and communicates with Manager / Supervisor. · Assists receptionist and other Department staff in various duties as necessary (i.e. scheduling and transporting patients, taking stock inventory, filing, etc.). · Develops knowledge of MR physics through on-the-job training, reading, etc., and keeps current on new developments in MR imaging. · Identifies hazardous system malfunctions; secures area and removes patients and personnel from magnet bay during emergency situations. · Co-leading the Martinos MR Safety Committee(MMSC) meetings along with the Lead MR Research Specialist · Assists the MMSC in updating and creation of MRI safety and MRI screening content, and updating thecenter’s online policies. · Oversee the onboarding and Management of New Industry Sponsored Studies with assistance of the MR Operations Manager. · Performs other related duties as required. SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: · Mental/visual ability to operate complex electronic equipment and instrumentation and perform quality control procedures on equipment. · Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to work with staff who have various degrees of medical and technical experience. · Must have strong computer skills and a work knowledge of MR physics. · Must demonstrate the ability to provide appropriate care to various age populations. · Must be able to read, write and effectively communicate in English. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS: Required: BLS / ARRT (MR) Preferred: MRSO (preferred) EDUCATION: Required: Certificate: Graduate of an approved Imaging Program Preferred: Bachelor's Degree EXPERIENCE: Required: Minimum of 1-year WORKING CONDITIONS: · Exposure to magnetic fields for which risks are not yet established; possible exposure to liquid/gaseous in the event of a system quench. · Mental/visual ability to operate complex electronic equipment and instrumentation and perform quality control procedures on equipment; ability to transfer patients to MR scan table and push table from prep room to exam room; must lift and transfer patients to stretchers, lift/move MRI coils, etc.
