Medical Lab Scientist, Blood Bank Part Time, Evening The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. The MGH Blood Bank is an FDA-licensed, AABB-accredited full-service facility that issues over 70,000 blood components annually. The Medical Technologist I functions independently under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor or Senior Medical Technologist. Conducts basic and advanced tests on blood samples, both donor and patient, to insure proper transfusion of blood and blood products; at an intermediate level, recognizes and resolves discrepancies observed in blood specimens or laboratory equipment; determines procedures to be followed according to preliminary serological results of the specimens; maintains records of transfusions. Gains experience and develops working knowledge by performing routine and complex procedures utilizing complex instrumentation and manual methods Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of results Performs and keeps accurate records of equipment maintenance and quality control Refers problems and unusual results to appropriate personnel Performs clerical and support services as needed. Responds to customer needs and requests Participates in proficiency testing of unknowns and internal and external continuing education Participates in continuing education programs related to laboratories Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology preferred and certified BS/BA in Science from an accredited college; and Certification Eligible based on one year work experience plus degree Certification eligible CLT at MGH with one year of performance evaluations which meet or exceed expectations and Ten hours of documented continuing education in previous year within division, hospital or external programs Skills required: All of the skills and abilities required for Clinical Laboratory Technologist and Highlevel of analytical ability and judgement Good understanding of department policies and procedures, test principles and equipment operation Ability to work independently on standard procedures and assignments High level of professionalism Ability to participate as requested in performance improvement, work re-design and divisional development projects
