GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed. The role of the respiratory supervisor is intended to uphold and support scheduled therapist in providing the highest quality of care according to the standards set by BWH respiratory leadership Team. The respiratory supervisor is a highly skilled clinician that possess excellent communication and organizational ability. The respiratory supervisor will coordinate effective communication among team members to include nurses, physicians, and ancillary clinicians to enhance respiratory clinical patient outcomes. The respiratory supervisor is expected to possess excellent time management skills and the ability to delegate workloads efficiently and appropriately throughout the shift. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation. Daily Shift Huddles 1. Discuss staffing status 2. Encourage teamwork efficiency, respective of dynamic environment 3. Coordinate known clinical occurrences (awareness; not necessarily doing them)4. Travels 5. Cannulations Assignments 0. The respiratory supervisor is responsible for oncoming staff assignments 1. The respiratory supervisor will email assignments sheets to respiratory leadership 2. Ensure all inpatient units are assigned and staffed appropriately 3. Ensure assignments are equitable to maintain patient safety and highest quality care Critical Thinking 0. Review clinical issues 1. Clarify and update workloads 2. Identify emergent/unexpected needs 3. Engage and encourage dialogue & critical thinking 4. Work on projects and special assignments assigned by managers. 5. Attend multidisciplinary meetings and work with multidisciplinary team members. Conflict Resolution 0. Respiratory supervisor is encouraged to support and redirect conflicts, according to BWH policies and procedures and communicate with respiratory leadership. 1. Defuse any conflict that may arise between staff members and/or multidisciplinary team. 2. Demonstrate open lines of communication. 3. Bring unresolved conflicts to management team. Scheduling 0. Work with provided templates to ensure equal staff par-levels as set by respiratory leadership1. ECMO par-levels - Assist in coordinating shift exchanges. - Vortex and OT or downsizing responsibilities. Supervisor scheduling 1. Supervisor assigned per shift when possible. (Approved by Director) 2. Responsible for at least every third weekend. (Approved by Director) 3. Holiday requirement rotated as staffing requires. (Approved by Director) 4. Vacations worked out between supervisors. (Approved by Director) QUALIFICATIONS Required: 1. A.S. in Respiratory Therapy. 2. One-year clinical training (or the equivalent). 3. Currently licensed as a Respiratory Therapist by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 4. Registration (RRT) by the N.B.R.C. within six (6) months of hire. Preferred: 1. B.S. in Respiratory Therapy. 2. Two years of previous critical care experience. 3 ECMO Experience strongly preferred SKILLS AND ABILITIIES REQUIRED 1. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills to interact with physicians, nurses and other allied health care members. 2. Must possess strong patient assessment skills. 3. Must possess professional and technical skills to act as a staff therapist. 4. Must demonstrate ability to motivate and direct professional and technical staff. QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.) 5 years Respiratory Therapy experience, Minimum 3 years ECMO experience, strongly preferred BLS/ACLS SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.) 1. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills to interact with peers, physicians, nurses and other allied health care members. 2. Must possess strong managerial and organizational skills needed to assist staff in prioritizing work & delegating tasks when appropriate. 3. Must demonstrate ability to motivate and direct professional and technical staff. Considerations: The respiratory supervisor will be considered part of staffing for the DFCI assignment and ECMO back-up as needed. They will engage in patient care when the acuity and volume demand as such. The respiratory supervisor must remain available in case of unanticipated emergencies or other clinical urgent needs. The respiratory supervisor will be required to communicate occurrences to Respiratory Leadership that may arise that are not reflected or outlined in the respiratory supervisor job description. The RT Supervisor will be available for staff training in coordination with the RT educator. Collaboration with RT educator in the education of new hires overseen by clinical manager. Supervisors asked to assist in QI chart audits will keep information confidential. They will report findings to QI coordinator and clinical manager. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: List the number of FTEs supervised. Responsible for overseeing 10-20 RRTs / shift, acting as their resource. The supervisor role does not have any HR oversight.
