Job Description

Siena College's School of Science is seeking an experienced Safety Specialist to join our dedicated team and contribute to the safety and well-being of our vibrant academic community. Siena College fosters collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to excellence, providing a fulfilling environment for professional growth As a Safety Specialist, you will provide technical guidance, develop safety plans, and oversee compliance with occupational and environmental regulations within our laboratories. Your role will be integral in fostering a culture of safety, promoting safe research practices, and protecting the well-being of our students, faculty, and staff.

The ideal candidate for this position will be energetic, self-driven, and possess a deep understanding of laboratory occupational and environmental regulations. You should have a passion for safety, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.  This position is embedded within Siena College's School of Science and reports directly to the School of Science Dean. Salary: $59,500.00

Job Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive training in laboratory safety and environmental compliance through the college's learning management system.
  • Review and provide expert guidance for hazard assessments in research and teaching laboratories, covering chemical, biological, radiation, laser, and physical hazards.
  • Develop and manage safety plans, assuming the role of Chemical Hygiene Officer.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and identify potential hazards.
  • Perform chemical exposure monitoring to maintain a safe working environment for all laboratory users.
  • Maintain accurate records of Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical inventories, waste management, training logs, and equipment maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant OSHA, EPA, DOH, DHS, and DOT regulations, promoting adherence to all applicable laws and guidelines.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in a physical science-related field or a bachelor's degree with 4 years of experience in a setting involving compliance with occupational and environmental health regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Relevant professional certifications such as Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer, Certified Safety Professional, OSHA 24-Hour HAZWOPER Technician or Specialist training, RCRA and DOT certifications, Safety Management Specialist (SMS), Certified Instructional Trainer (CIT), and/or Biosafety experience

A background screening will be required.
