ALEXANDRIA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP (AEDP) is a public-private partnership that serves to promote the City of Alexandria as a premier location for businesses by capitalizing on its assets including multiple Metro stations, historical character, and riverfront location in order to enhance the city’s tax revenue and increase employment opportunities.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Vice President (SVP) serves as a strategic advisor to the President & CEO and oversees and supports the daily activities of AEDP’s client-serving and external departments. The SVP serves on the AEDP leadership team, and plays a critical role in the design, development, and coordination of AEDP’s strategic plan, and related activities in coordination with the City of Alexandria, AEDP’s major funder.
The Senior Vice President oversees the day-to-day work of AEDP’s Business Development, Real Estate and Small Business and Entrepreneurship departments, actively partnering with department heads to ensure goals and objectives are achieved. The SVP eliminates barriers to success by providing daily guidance, direction, and decision-making, and ensuring departments are properly resourced. The SVP is responsible for informing the President & CEO of each department’s activities and consults with the President & CEO prior to any change in a department’s strategic direction or staffing.
The incumbent serves as the acting President & CEO in the President & CEO’s absence.

General and specific direction for this position is provided by the President & CEO
Strategic Advisor
Contributes to AEDP’s strategic planning process by outlining initiatives, staff assignments, resource requirements and project timelines in support of priorities identified by the President & CEO for the departments in the SVP portfolio
Advises on the development and implementation of economic development policies and programs in response to emerging issues and/or mandates
Assists with significant economic development projects by coordinating staff and managing deliverables
Provides recommendations related to budget and staffing decisions
Serves as a confidential sounding board helping to frame positions, negotiate terms, and develop messaging on challenging issues and decisions
Counsels on decisions to engage AEDP staff and/or resources in external engagements and assists the President & CEO with managing AEDP’s relationships with outside parties
Serves as the President & CEO’s representative to external stakeholder groups such as city departments, business associations, community coalitions and regional partnerships as requested
Department Operations & Programs
Leads and directs Department Heads in the creation of annual work plans with specific goals and objectives based on priorities contained in the strategic plan; monitors, tracks, and reports on progress towards achieving annual goals and objectives
Partners with Department Heads to identify, align, and/or procure staffing, resources, and expertise necessary to achieve annual goals and objectives
Provides daily, tactical decision-making to alleviate challenges and enable success
Coordinates and supports major projects and initiatives involving multiple departments by aligning staff and resources, creating project timelines, and tracking deliverables
Develops and presents to the President & CEO regular reports on department activities and strategic direction
Portfolio Department Expertise
Business Development: provides guidance and mentorship to AEDP’s business attraction, retention, and expansion team
Real Estate: advise on team’s work to create real estate opportunities and partnerships for economic development prospects
Small Business and Entrepreneurship: manage resources and staff delivering policies and programs focused on growing entrepreneurial ecosystem, including overseeing grant programs that support entrepreneurs and startup businesses; support the creation of partnerships with and programs for historically under-represented business owners;
Oversee and direct process improvement for client movement between three departments in the SVP’s portfolio; create reporting mechanisms and protocols for pipeline and projects within the three departments; constant focus on ways for departments to work seamlessly together to serve all types of businesses and property owners in Alexandria
Advise and oversee creation of incentive proposals for clients that are considering Alexandria as a new or expanded business location

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience
A minimum of 5 years of executive leadership experience directing staff and serving as a strategic advisor to a principle(s). Experience in business development and real estate dealmaking, contributing to strategic planning processes, major programs, and operating budgets.
Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Administration, or a related field. Masters degree is a plus, but not required.
